The Celebrating Deshastha:
'Deshastha' in Sanskrit means 'inland' as we traditionally lived in the interiors away from the coast. We are found primarily in Maharashtra and speak Marathi. We are considered to be the direct descendants of the great rishis (sages) who settled in Dandakaranya (Maharashtra) in ancient times. Many in our community used to practise Ayurvedic medicine.
